Play a role in developing the global roadmap for ceramics and glasses!
Attend the 1st International Congress on Ceramics in June 2006!

What new applications can you imagine for ceramics or glasses? These could be structural, thermal, electronic, chemical, or biomedical. Will your application avert the coming energy crisis? Will it have a longer lifetime than current products? Is it easily recyclable? Will it influence our quality of life?

The American Ceramic Society will award up to 20 registration and travel grants (valued at $750) for the best ideas submitted by students for new, innovative applications for glass and ceramic materials. The 20 winning students will take part in a poster session during the 1st International Congress on Ceramics, 25-29 June 2006, in Toronto, Canada where they will meet international leaders in ceramics and glass technology. The winning entries also will be published in “The Global Roadmap for Ceramics,” the formal conference publication. Additional cash prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.

Need more details? Check out the paper guidelines. Papers are due by 25 March 2006. We want your ideas, so submit your paper today!

Background

The American Ceramic Society, in collaboration with the Ceramic Society of Japan and the European Ceramic Society, has initiated a new series of biennial meetings. The inaugural meeting of the 1st International Congress on Ceramics is a global event designed to facilitate discussion and planning concerning major issues that face the ceramic and glass industry, culminating in the development of a global roadmap for ceramics.

The 2006 Congress is developed and organized to produce a “Global Roadmap for Ceramics.” Speakers will provide their vision on a broad range of ceramic applications critical to the technologies of tomorrow, such as ceramics energy, transportation, medicine and biology, communication, electronics, optical systems, aerospace, etc. The end product of the ICC will be a publication in both electronic and print format that will include position papers written by invited speakers, developed during workshop sessions.

Instructions

Prepare a concept paper, no more than 5 typed pages (single-spaced) including figures and tables, which focus on one original opportunity for ceramics or glasses. These might include

  • New, revolutionary applications for ceramics or glasses.
  • New ceramic/glass components that would improve the performance of systems.
  • A lower cost or higher efficiency manufacturing process.
  • “Green” manufacturing processes that would result in energy savings or reduced pollution.
  • Longer lifetimes for current components.
  • Personal safety or an improved quality of life.
