Alfred R. Cooper Student Award
Call for Nominations: Deadline July 31, 2007

In conjunction with the newly established Cooper Session to be held annually during the Glass and Optical Materials Program of the MS&T meeting, a new undergraduate award, the Cooper Scholars Award, named in honor of the late Professor Alfred R. Cooper, Jr., is being sponsored by the Glass & Optical Materials Division. Dr. Cooper was a member of the faculty at Case Western Reserve University and a prominent contributor to the understanding of many glass phenomena and glass problems.

The purpose of this new annual award is to encourage and recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated excellence in research in glass science or technology. The Cooper Scholars award will be presented at the end of the Cooper Session on September 17, 2007 at MS&T in Detroit, Michigan.

The Cooper Student Award recipient will receive an award plaque, a check for $500 and up to $500 to offset travel.

How to submit nominations: the nomination package can be submitted by the undergraduate student candidate and/or by the faculty advisor or other research mentor and should consist of the three documents listed below. The student can be from any country. Membership in The American Ceramic Society, the Glass & Optical Materials Division, or Material Advantage is not required.

Information to be submitted for nominations:

  1. A nomination letter from the faculty advisor and/or other research/development mentor for the project describing the role, contributions, and strengths of the student.
  2. A five page report written by the student describing:
    1. The cover page will provide the project title and student
    2. Two pages can be used for technical description of the project
      1. The technical problem being solved or research project being undertaken
      2. The methods used to solve the problem or conduct the research
      3. The results obtained from the study
      4. An analysis of the results in terms of the goals of the project
      5. A description of future work to continue and expand the project
    3. One page can be used for figures which must be publication quality
    4. One page can be used for citations to provide bibliographic information
  3. A two page essay written by the student describing:
    1. What was learned scientifically from the project.
    2. What he/she enjoyed most about the project.
    3. His/her future plans.
  4. Only one nomination will be accepted per institution.

The nomination deadline for the 2007 award is July 31, 2007.
