Southwest Section of the American Ceramic Society

APPLICATION FOR THE FORREST K. PENCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Dr. Pence, the late professor of Ceramic Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin along with eleven brick manufacturers organized the Texas Ceramic society in 1942.Later that year, the name was changed to The Ceramic Society of the Southwest. The Southwest Section was chartered on April 21,1951.Both organizations operated independently until June,1958 when they merged into what is now the Southwest Section of the American Ceramic Society. Following Dr.Pence's death in 1957, members of the Ceramic Society of the Southwest voted to create the Pence Memorial Scholarship Fund.One or more grants have been made annually since 1982.

Scholarship grants will be awarded to students working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in a four year program, although consideration will be given to those in a two year degree/certificate program, providing other criteria are met. Applicants will be required to be sponsored by an active member of the Southwest Section of the American Ceramic Society.

SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS ARE MADE USING THE FOLLOWING PRIORITIES:

  1. Evidence of dedication to ceramic science and /or the ceramic industry in general.
  2. Scholastic record.
  3. Financial need.
  4. Well rounded personal character.
  5. Should more than one applicant be deemed equally eligible, the permanent resident of the Southwest Section (Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and the border states of Mexico) will be selected.
  6. Should more than one applicant remain equally eligible after the criteria are considered, the applicants may be asked to supply additional information.
  7. Sponsorship or recommendation by an active member of the Southwest Section Acers.
