This page highlights student scholarships, awards and contests offered by ACerS Sections, Divisions and Classes. ACerS Basic Science Division Ceramographic Competition
The Ceramographic Competition is an annual exhibit staged to promote the use of micrographs and microanalysis as tools in the scientific investigation of ceramic materials. The competition occurs at ACerS Annual Meeting and entries are prominently displayed in the Convention Center. The Best of Show (winner of the Roland B. Snow Award) will be published in the American Ceramic Society Bulletin. Other entries will appear in The Journal of the American Ceramic Society throughout the year.

Participants are encouraged to submit entries in one of the following general categories:

  • Optical micrographs (including confocal)
  • Scanning electron micrographs
  • Transmission electron micrographs
  • Microanalysis (including electron microprobe, Auger, SIMS, AEM)
  • Combined techniques
  • Problem solving (include micrographs that provide answers to a problem)
  • Scanning probe micrographs
  • Undergraduate studies
Prizes are awarded for first, second and third in each category. Deadline for Entries: April 1.

ACerS Cements Division Student Travel Award
Students who participate in the Cements Division Poster Session at Annual Meeting could qualify for travel support. Contact the Division Program Chair for details.

ACerS Central Ohio Section Ceramic Engineering/Technology Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded once a year to a sophomore within the Materials Science and Engineering Department of The Ohio State University (Ceramic Engineering emphasis) and to a first-year student in the Ceramic Technology program at Hocking Technical College. The intent is to increase interest in pursuing a Ceramic Engineering/Technology curriculum.

CEC Student Speaking Contest
Deadline for Nominations: February 1
The purpose of the Student Speaking Contest is to encourage undergraduate students to present technical papers and to improve their skills in the techniques of presentation. Each entrant will receive a partial transportation allowance to the Annual Meeting prorated from funds of The American Ceramic Society. The contestant must participate in the semifinals and finals (if selected) at the Annual Meeting to fulfill an obligation for accepting the transportation allowance. Prizes to be awarded in addition to the transportation allowance include, (i) a cash award of $200 to the winner plus a paid membership in the Society and subscription to the Journal; (ii) a cash award of $100 to the First runner-up plus a paid membership in the Society and subscription to the Journal, and (iii) a cash award of $50 to two (2) Second runners-up plus a paid membership in the Society and a subscription to the Journal.

The Nominating Process
All schools and departments with ACerS Student Branches are allowed one entry in the National Contest who shall be a member of an ACerS Student Branch at the time of the local speaking contest. Schools and departments without ACerS Student Branches are allowed one entry in the National Contest who shall be a student member of ACerS at the time of the local contest. The entry must be an undergraduate student majoring in ceramics, or related or allied field at the time he/she is chosen as an entrant. Entrants will be allowed to compete in the National Contest even though they may have graduated or left school for some reason, prior to the National Contest. Previous first place winners of the National Contest are not eligible to be entrants. The subject must be technical (but may include historical aspects). It need not be a report of work done by an entrant, but must have recognized importance to the ceramic industry. Each contestant will be allowed six to eight minutes for presentation. Use of visual aids is acceptable. All entrants will be randomly and evenly split to speak at two concurrent semifinals. Two entrants from each semifinal will advance to the finals.

Each entrant will be the winner of a local speaking contest, which will have had at least two contestants. Local contests shall be directed by the faculty of each school or department. The name of the entrant shall be reported to the Chair of the National Speaking Contest no later than February 7th of the year of the contest. This is the deadline for publication of the Ceramic Bulletin.

CEC Graduate Student Poster Contest
The purpose of the contest, open to graduate students or person who will have received M.S. or Ph.D. degrees within six months of the Annual Meeting, is to recognize superior research performed during graduate study. First, second and third place prizes are given in the amounts of $250, $100 and $100, respectively. Recognition will be given to the winner at the Student Awards Ceremony during the Annual Meeting. Entries will be displayed at a time and location to be designated by the organizers. Typically, the posters will be displayed on Sunday evening in conjunction with other CEC activities. To enter, complete and return an Abstract Form included in the Call for Papers. Posters must be accepted for a technical session to be entered into the contest. Posters listing a graduate student as the primary author are automatically eligible for the competition. You can check your status in the competition by contacting the CEC President-Elect.

ACerS Electonics Division Hoffman Scholarship
The Hoffman Scholarship is an undergraduate tuition scholarship in memory of Dr. Lewis C. Hoffman, former chair and trustee of the Electronics Division, a Dupont Fellow and one of the pioneers in the incorporation of ceramics/glass science and engineering in the area of thick film microelectronic circuits technology.

The award consists of $2000 plus a memorial plaque, to be given at the annual meeting of The American Ceramic Society.

Selection Factors:

  • UNDERGRADUATE JUNIOR STANDING
  • TOTAL GPA, SCIENCE COURSE GPA
  • PSAT/SAT/ACT SCORES, if available
  • FACULTY ADVISOR RECOMMENDATION LETTER
  • EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
  • AN ESSAY OF 500 WORDS ON A PARTICULAR TOPIC

Please provide all the above information on paper. Faculty recommendation letter may be mailed separately.

Keramos Student Travel Award

This award consists of $100 for hotel expenses, full student registration, and paid transportation (Supersaver Airfare or $0.34/mile driving expenses depending on distance) Any Keramos undergraduate members can apply for this travel award to attend the National Keramos meeting and Annual ACerS convention. These funds provide worthy members a major opportunity to interact professionally within the Ceramics community. Submit your entry to Paul Anderson, Keramos General Secretary by March 15.

Criteria for selection are:

  • A letter <= 150 words outlining participation in local chapter activities, undersigned by the Chapter President or Advisor.
  • A non-delegate.
  • An undergraduate.

The Award will include:
  • Transportation (air or ground)
  • $100 for hotel expenses
  • Student registration.

Deadline for entry: March 15th.

Keramos Undergraduate Poster Competition
The competition is open to all undergraduates presenting posters at the ACerS Annual Meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to increase your professional exposure, interact with some of the leaders in the field of ceramics, and make all that work you are doing for that senior project (or an internship, or ...) financially rewarding.

Applicants should mark the checkboxes for "Undergraduate Student Presenter" and "Poster presentation" when they submit their abstracts to ACerS. Posters should conform to the guidelines given by ACerS (i.e. for size).

Judging will be done on the basis of technical merit and presentation. Winners will also be eligible for the CEC sponsored poster contest (which is largely aimed at graduate students). The award structure for Keramos' competition will be:

1st Place $200

2nd Place $100

3rd Place $50

ACerS Lehigh Valley Section
The Section has placed an endowment with Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pa.) to fund Kraner Undergraduate Summer Fellowships. Applications are invited. The fellowships honor the late Hobart M. Kraner, past president of the Society and a member and generous benefactor of the Section.

Kraner Fellows will receive a $3000 stipend while spending approximately 10 weeks working on a ceramic-related research project at Lehigh. Qualified undergraduates should be enrolled in a materials-related curriculum such as materials science and engineering, ceramics, chemistry, or physics. Those who secure fellowships may apply for a renewal for the following summer.

ACerS New England Section Scholarship Program
$1,000 scholarships are awarded to undergraduate scholars from New England who are pursuing a degree in ceramics at an accredited ceramics program throughout the United States. Nominees are solicited from the schools yearly.

ACerS New Mexico Section Undergraduate Ceramic Achievement Award
Full time students who have completed sophomore or junior level science or engineering curriculum at a New Mexico college or university may apply for this scholarship (award amount determined each year). Submission requirements: Application form, Transcript, 1 letter of recommendation, 3 references, Essay on ceramics, ceramic careers, or ceramics research, 2 - 4 pages. Deadline for application is December 1.

ACerS New Mexico Section Graduate Student Research Award
Full time students who are currently in a masters or doctorate program in a physical science or engineering field at a New Mexico college or university may apply for this scholarship (award amount determined each year). Submission requirements: Application form, Transcript, 1 letter of recommendation, 3 references, Extended abstract (2 - 4 pages) on scientific research (ceramics research will be given preference) that may be presented at a New Mexico Section meeting. Deadline for application is December 1.

The Pennsylvania State University's Ceramic Science and Engineering Program
The Pennsylvania State University's Ceramic Science and Engineering Program offers numerous scholarships, totaling over $30,000 per year, to students enrolled in Ceramic Science and Engineering at Penn State. The scholarships are based primarily on merit, but some also have a demonstrated financial need criteria. Students must file a financial need form and an application in March of each year to be considered in the next round of scholarship awards. All of the scholarship awardees are selected by a committee comprised of Ceramic Science and Engineering faculty. Scholarship awards are made annually, generally in the summer just prior to the start of fall semester.

ACerS Pittsburgh Section J. Earl Frazier Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually to a Junior enrolled in an accredited college or university working toward a degree in ceramic engineering, ceramic science, or Materials Science with a Ceramic option. Applicants home residence must be within the geographical confines of the Pittsburgh Section (certain counties from Pennsylvania, Ohio, or West Virginia).

There are two main considerations in the selection of the recipient. They are academic proficiency and financial need, with both parameters given equal weight in the Committee's decision. The scholarship is awarded at a minimum of $3,000 on a single grant basis, and is used to defray expenses during the recipient's senior year. ACerS Southwest Section - The Forrest K. Pence Memorial Scholarship Program
Students registered in a recognized two or four year program of ceramic engineering or other disciplines that are directly related to a professional career in the ceramic industry, and who evidence a sincere dedication and intent to begin a career in the ceramic industry following graduation, are invited to apply for this grant.

The applicant must have the following priorities:

  1. Evidence of dedication to ceramic sciences and the ceramic industry.
  2. Scholastic record.
  3. Financial Need.
  4. Well rounded personal character.
  5. Should more than one applicant be deemed equally eligible, the permanent resident of the Southwest Section (Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and the border states of Mexico will be selected.
  6. Interest in industries relevant to the Southwest Section.

Funding permitted, this scholarship is awarded twice yearly, with Applications due by August 1 and/or December 1. Click here for a printable application.

ACerS Southwest Section - The Robert and Mary Buttle Scholarship Fund
Students of a recognized two or four year program of ceramic engineering or ceramic materials science are invited to apply for a grant from this fund following their successful completion of their first (freshman) year. The applicant must enclose a recommendation from his/her department head or advisor and qualify according to the following criteria, listed in order or priority.

  1. Evidence of dedication to ceramic sciences
  2. Scholastic record.
  3. Financial Need.
  4. Well rounded personal character.
  5. Should more than on applicant be deemed equally eligible, the permanent resident of the Southwest Section (Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and the border states of Mexico will be selected.
  6. Should more than one applicant remain equally eligible, the applicants may be asked to supply additional information.
