August 11, 2006: The American Ceramic Society announced
today that the Board of Directors has selected Scott M. Steen as its next
Executive Director, effective November 1, 2006. Steen will take over from
Glenn Harvey, who will retire again, having come out of retirement to
serve the Society in 2003.
Dr. Warren W. Wolf, 2005-2006 Society President stated that The Society
has gone through a major transition during the past three years, resulting
in a strong financial base and a sound strategic plan that defines vital
roles for the Society in materials science, ceramic commerce and the
international ceramics community. He noted that, “the Officers
and Board are exceedingly pleased to find someone with Scott Steen’s
high energy, enthusiasm and extensive experience in helping associations
to strategize and to accomplish plans for growth and vitality.”
Scott Steen currently serves as chief knowledge & strategy officer
for the American Society of Association Executives & The Center
for Association Leadership, an international, voluntary organization
with 22,000 members. Steen began his association career in 1985 and
has held executive level positions managing education, marketing, and
publications departments.
In his current position, Steen provides leadership to several functions,
including strategic planning, knowledge initiatives, CEO services, web-based
program and product development, and international activities. He played
a pivotal role in the creation of The Center for Association Leadership,
the premier provider of learning, future-focused research, and knowledge
for the association profession, and served as The Center’s first
chief operating officer until the organization merged with ASAE in 2004.
He serves as editorial director for the Journal of Association Leadership,
and is a frequent speaker, facilitator, and author on association topics.
“I am honored to be asked to join The American Ceramic Society
as executive director at such an important time in its history,” Steen
said. “Glenn Harvey and the board have done a terrific job of
positioning ACerS for growth. I am looking forward to working with members
and staff to build an organization that is both a leader in the materials
science community and an essential resource for ceramic scientists and
engineers.”
Steen will begin employment on October 1, assuming the executive director
title on November 1.
