Boston, Massachusetts – August 20, 2004 – The American Ceramic
Society (ACerS) and Blackwell Publishing today announced a new publishing
partnership. ACerS selected Blackwell Publishing, a global society publisher,
to publish its two premier publications, the Journal of the American Ceramic
Society and the International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology. Both
publications were formerly self-published by the society.
“
After 75 years of in-house publishing, our society wanted to enhance
the strategic direction and development of the ACerS journals,” commented
Glenn Harvey, Executive Director and Publisher for The American Ceramic Society. “We
chose Blackwell for its publishing expertise, commitment to long-term success,
and experience working with societies.”
“
It is an honor for Blackwell to be The American Ceramic Society’s publisher-of-choice.
More societies choose Blackwell as their partner than any other publisher
because we are uniquely able to share expertise and ensure strong financial
returns at a time of rapid change in the industry,” affirms Gordon Tibbitts,
President of Blackwell Publishing, Inc. “This society and its journals
are the cornerstone of Blackwell’s materials science collection, adding
to our growing list of scientific and professional journals.”
In 1974, the U.S. market for ceramics was estimated at $20 million.
Today, the U.S. ceramic market is estimated at well over $35 billion.
This industry is made up of broad segments that are classified as: structural
clay
products, whitewares, refractories, glasses, abrasives, cements,
and advanced ceramics. Many of these ceramic materials play an important,
and sometimes
unseen, role in the lives of many—“biocompatible” ceramics
used in hip replacements, marine coral transformed into synthetic
bone for spinal fusions, and a transparent, bullet-proof glass so tough it
can withstand
an anti-tank weapon projectile. These are only a few developments
made possible by ceramic materials. Full coverage of ceramic research and
its commercial
applications can be found in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society and the International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology.

About the Journals
For more than three-quarters of a century, the Journal of the American Ceramic
Society has been the premier forum and archive used by scientists,
engineers, and students to learn about original research in ceramics. Every
month the Journal publishes more than 40 papers that have been rigorously
reviewed by an international team of renowned ceramists. The papers describe
research concerning traditional and advanced ceramic materials and composites,
fabrication processes, applications, and instrumentation. Invited feature
papers by recognized authorities who review scientific developments in particular
fields of research are published frequently. The Journal includes approximately
3600 editorial pages and is published 12 times each year.
The International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology is a new peer-reviewed
periodical that provides the most recent information on ceramic product
development and commercialization for engineers, manufacturers, and research
and development scientists. Each issue focuses on a high-interest, high-impact
