ACerS APPOINTS PYE TO CHAIR GLOBALIZATION TASK FORCE
|
WESTERVILLE, OHIO — Dr. Kathryn Logan, president of The American Ceramic Society (ACerS), announced the appointment of Dr. L. David Pye, dean emeritus, the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, to the newly created position of Chair, The International Globalization Task Force. The Society’s Board of Directors approved the appointment at its December meeting in Columbus.
The Task Force, to be comprised of members throughout the world, was established by the Society to recommend and prioritize actions where global collaborations may lead to increased benefits and value to the arts, science, technology and applications of ceramics in the international ceramic and glass communities.

Pye earned a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Ceramics from Alfred University and has done graduate work at the University of Rochester. Having been involved with international educational, research, and industrial programs for several decades, Pye is well qualified for this appointment. He has served as Director of the Study Abroad Program of the College of Ceramics and has convened international conferences on the physics and chemistry of glass at the Cambridge University, UK, the United Nations University, Japan, and most recently Bad Soden, Germany. A past member of the ACerS Board of Directors, he also has served as President of the International Commission on Glass, a Society of more than thirty Scientific and Technical Organizations throughout the world. He is an honorary member of the German Society of Glass Technology, Honorary Fellow, the British Society of Glass Technology, and a member of the prestigious World Academy of Ceramics.

As Dean of the College of Ceramics he led faculty initiated programs to establish new degree programs in Material Science, Electronic Arts and Biomedical Materials Engineering. He also established the Van Frechette International Friendship Park on behalf of all students from foreign lands who have studied at Alfred University. As a member of the faculty, he was the founding Director of the National Science Foundation Industry-University Center for Glass Research; one of the largest of its kind established within the NSF based program. Nearly forty doctoral and master students worked with him on advancing the fabrication, characterization and application of glass. He also has received a number of honors including the State University Chancellor’s Award for Scholarship and Creativity, Alfred University’s Presidential Order of Merit, the Dominick Labino Glass Art Society Award, and the Phoenix Glassman of the Year Award by the US glass industry.
The American Ceramic Society is an international association based in Westerville, Ohio, that is dedicated to the dissemination of scientific, commercial, and educational information about ceramic materials and industries. ACerS has more than 8,000 members in 80 countries.
